Gene Modification Project 752

August 10th, 2010
You’re now chatting with a random stranger. Say hi!
You: You awake to find yourself lying in a dusty corridor. As you pick yourself up, you realise – with a rising sense of alarm – that you have no memory of where you are or how you got there. It’s not until you realise that you can’t even remember who you are that you start to panic.
You: You are in a long, dusty corridor. Faded fluorescent lights flicker dimly overhead. To the south is a wall bearing a display board. To the east and west are locked doors. To the north, the corridor continues. What next?
Stranger: look at the display board I suppose
You: You attempt to examine the display board. Your head is swimming and you can’t seem to focus clearly enough to read it.
Stranger: Inspect the locks to see what kind they are, I might be able to pick them
You: You examine the lock on the east door. It is a high security biometric lock which requires a fingerprint and retinal scan to unlock. The lock on the west door is a standard key lock and seems flimsy.
Stranger: Check my pockets
You: You are carrying a toothpick, a moustache comb, a small penguin and some peanuts.
Stranger: penguin figurine? or living small penguin?
You: The penguin is very small, but alive and well. It is currently asleep.
Stranger: hmmmm….Kick the door near the handle
Stranger: the west door
You: Summoning your strength, you land a heavy blow on the west door. It is still closed, but you can see that the hinges are starting to bend. You think you can hear, from the other side of the door, someone crying.
Stranger: Is the crying male or female?
You: You press your ear to the door and strain your ears. The crying sounds like a woman (although it may simply be a very, very wimpy man).
Stranger: “Excuse me! Might you be able to help me? This is rather embarrassing but I seem to be lost”
You: The crying halts. You hear a very shaky voice. It sounds astonished.
You: “Doctor SMITH???”
Stranger: “No, I …uh…Im not a doctor…or at least if I am, I dont remember”
You: You hear a key turning in the lock and the door is suddenly flung open. It reveals a young woman in a white lab-coat. Her eyes are red from crying but they light up when she sees you. “Oh god, we thought you were dead! The pineapples Dr Smith, they were…”
You: And with that, she faints.
Stranger: Catches her before she hits the ground, scoops her up and enters the room, lays her on the most appropriate surface “HEY, Miss! Miss wake up!”
You: You shake her gently, but she is completely unconscious. Looking around, you seem to be in a lecture hall.
Stranger: search her body for a phone
You: Feeling slightly guilty, you gently pat down the unconscious woman. She does not seem to be carrying a phone, but you do find a wallet.
Stranger: Look for identification.
You: Opening the wallet, you see $24 in cash, a Visa card and an ID card. The ID card reads “Ms Samantha Stewart – Research Assistant – University of Southern California”.
Stranger: Put everything back in the wallet, put the wallet back onto her. “University of Southern California…” Exits the room and goes down the corridor
You: You politely slip the wallet back into her pocket and return to the corridor.
You: You are in a long, dusty corridor. Faded fluorescent lights flicker dimly overhead. To the south is a wall bearing a display board. To the east is a locked door. To the west is the lecture hall. To the north, the corridor continues. What next?
Stranger: Try reading the display board again, if i cant then go down the north corridor
You: Your eyes seem to be able to focus now. Examining the display board you see a range of mundane notes and notices. One catches your eye, though. It reads: “WANTED – Research Assistants to work on the latest gene modification project. Contact Dr Smith in the Biology Lab”
Stranger: “hmmm…” presses thumb against the finger scan for the eastern door
You: Cautiously, you press your thumb against the fingerprint scanner. There is a slight buzzing sound. Then, you notice one of the two red lights on the door turns green,
Stranger: leans down and gives my retinal scan
You: You feel an odd tingling sensation as the laser scans your eye. The second light turns green and there is a soft click from the door.
Stranger: “this probly isnt going to get me any closer to a hospital…which if i have no memories is where I should go, but…” Slowly opens the door
You: You trepidatiously push open the door. The room beyond is dark, light only dimly by the lights from electronic control panels that seem to be around the room. There is a strong smell of tropical fruit which, oddly, fills you with a strong sense of foreboding.
Stranger: Remembers “Oh god, we thought you were dead! The pineapples Dr Smith, they were…”. Steps into the room and turns on the lights
You: You are beginning to feel uneasy but, determined to find out who you are and what is going on, you step into the room. You grope around briefly until you find the light switch, which you flick on. The sudden bright light dazzles you briefly.
You: You are in a laboratory. Various pieces of machinery and scientific apparatus are scattered around the room. You notice, at the back of the room, what appears to be a large metal cage. The door is open and it is empty.
Stranger: inspect any papers laying around
You: You search frantically for any documents that might give you a clue. You find some research manuals and a few notes. When you attempt to pick them up, however, you discover that they are mostly unreadable because they are soaked in some sort of sticky, yellow, sweet-scented liquid. The ink has run on most of the documents but you do manage to make out the words “gene modification project 752″, “pineapples”, “coming along even more rapidly than we could have hoped” and “elephants”.
You: There is a strange noise coming from the direction of the corridor.
Stranger: Search for any kind of thing to be used as a weapon
You: With a growing sense of uneasiness, you look around the lab for anything that might be used defensively. The best you can find is a set of heavy metal tongs.
You: The tropical fruit smell is getting stronger. Strange pictures start entering your head. You seem to remember some sort of contract … it had to do with improving crop harvests … or something…
Stranger: Takes the bolt from the center of the tongs so i have one in each hand. Goes out into the corridor so i can at least shut the door the woman is in
You: Proving tha chivalry is alive and well, you step out into the corridor and slam shut the door to the lecture hall. Then you turn at look nrth, along the corridor. It is a very long corridor and you can make out movement in the distance.
Stranger: thinks for a second…goes into the lecture hall and slams and locks the door behind me “WAKE UP, WE GOTTA GO!” Searching for a weapon
You: Miss Stewart is starting to regain consciousness, but she’s very vague. She mumbles something that you can barely hear. It sounds like, “Water”. Looking around, you notice a water cooler in one corner of the room.
Stranger: goes and gets a small cup of water and throws it on Miss Stewart “There, now wake up, We have to get out of here”. Looking for windows to break in the lecture hall to get out of that way
You: Miss Stewart gasps and sits up. She looks down at her dripping shirt and then, incredulously, back up at you. “Not me you fool! The pineapples! Remember?”. She starts to stagger to her feet. “We found that the combination with the elephant genes made them experience extreme thirst. Maybe we can use th…Aargh!” She slips over in the pool of water and bumps her head. She is now unconscious again.
Stranger: “MA THER FA KERR!” Goes out into the hall and shuts the door behind me, Tongs in hand
You: You are back in the long dusty corridor. And you are not alone. As you turn around after shutting the door, you come face to face with the strangest looking entity you have ever encountered. It bears a very strong resemblance to a pinapple, except that it is as tall as you are and it seems to have a trunk. The trunk is sniffing. It sniffs YOU. You watch in horror as it sucks up the residual water that splashed onto your hand when you poured up Miss Stewart’s glass of water.
Stranger: “So you are just thirsty then?” *slowly tries to go back into the lecture hall without having the pineapples follow*
You: Not knowing whether to be disgusted or astounded by the thing in front of you, you try to slip back into the lecture hall. Unfortunately, the pinephant has developed a taste for you. It hooks its surprisingly strong trunk around the door, tears it off its hinges, and follows you in. Arriving in the lecture hall, it turns its attention to the very damp Miss Stewart.
Stranger: “FUUUUUCK” bolts over to the water cooler and tips it over
You: The water cooler thumps to the floor and the pinephant turns at the sound. It doesn’t have eyes, or a mouth for that matter, but somehow you are certain that it is grinning. It rolls over to the water cooler and plunges its trunk into the water that is leaking out.
Stranger: goes around the feeding pinephant and fireman carries the unconscious miss stewart down the north corridor
You: You haul Miss Stewart over your shoulder and stagger towards the corridor. The smell of her perfume brings back more memories … you recall weeks spent working together trying to find a way to make pineapples grow larger … you were experimenting with the addition of different genes … it was all going so well, the pineapples were getting huge … a tickling sensation on the back of your neck draws you back from your reminiscing. Horrified, you slowly turn around and see the pinephant.
You: It looks … happy, somehow. Delighted, even. It seems to have really enjoyed its drink. In fact, it’s trying to hug you with it’s trunk. Oh god – it LIKES you!
Stranger: Slowly reaches out and pets the leaves on the top “Good Pinephant…you must have hated living in that cage huh?”
You: The pinephant emits the strangest sound that could possibly be imagined. It sounds like … it sounds … it’s PURRING!
You: There is a sigh from your shoulder. Miss Stewart is waking up. You gently set her down on the ground.
Stranger: “Miss Stewart are you alright are you awake?” I say as i continue stroking the pinephants leaves and pet its trunk
You: Miss Stewart’s delicate eyelids flutter. It seems strange to you that you never noticed how beautiful she is before. She murmers, “Dr Smith? Are we dead?”
Stranger: “Well, I’ve come to 3 conclusions. Either Im having a really weird LSD trip, Im dreaming, or I got some questions only you can answer. But dead, no. We arent dead”
You: “We’re not? You saved us! Oh Dr Sm…” she halts mid sentence as her eyes come to rest on the pinephant, which you are still affectionately stroking. She turns back to you, questions written all over her face.
Stranger: “Look, I need to get to a hospital, as you too, as you’ve passed out twice in the last 15 minutes”
You: “Yes … hospital …” She slowly stands up. She is going to great lengths not to look at the pinephant. She seems to have decided not to ask.
Stranger: “oh hey, Since i dont remember who I am right now, and I will probly never have the social freedom to say this again, Your tits look awesome in a soaked white lab coat” Smirks from ear to ear as I face the doorway “Shall we?”
You: “We’d better go,” she murmers, smiling. Then she leans in close to you ear and whispers, “but first, I better say thankyou for rescuing me”. And then she plants her gorgeous lips on your face. After several minutes, you come up for air. “Let’s get out of this place” she says.
You: You, Miss Stewart and the pinephant walk out of that godforesaken university together. And you never look back.
You: Congratulations, you have finished the game. You scored 100 out of a possible 100.
Stranger: penguin status?
You: The penguin has woken up. It wonders what all the fuss is about.
Stranger: aw
You: It and the pinephant become best friends.
Stranger: aw!
You: Thank you for playing.
You: That was the bloody awesome mate!
Stranger: lol yeah I liked it
You: Goodbye
Stranger: later
You have disconnected.
